Take a trip to FDR park to visit the oldest Swedish-American museum in the United States that provides events, exhibitions and education to South Philadelphia. The American Swedish Historical Museum is located on land that was part of a 17th-century land grant from Queen Christina of Sweden to settlers from the Nordic country. Several of the museum’s galleries are dedicated to honoring the New Sweden Colony with the building modeled after a 17th century Swedish manor. Rotating exhibits from Swedish fabrics displays to a model showcasing Finland’s sauna traditions keeps displays fresh for history fans of all ages.

It may not be the most famous museum in the City of Brotherly Love, but it’s easy to understand why the American Swedish Historical Museum has been chosen by readers as the city’s best museum. This stunning facility inside the Franklin D. Roosevelt Park in South Philadelphia offers a whole lot for visitors to do. The museum’s 20,000-square-foot interior is divided into 12 exhibition galleries, a library featuring books on Swedish and Swedish-American art, history and other subjects, a large dining room/conference area and, of course, a museum store where your kids will likely want to make a stop before leaving.
