Washington started his career as a Philly-based sports anchor in 1986 before moving to the news desk in 1996 and becoming one of the premier all-around journalists in the region. He has interviewed every sitting American president and has diligently covered major local, national, and international news. In 1987, Temple University established the Jim Gardner Scholarship, which is awarded to a promising broadcast journalism student every year.

Most recently, Jim received the 2022 John Cardinal Foley Award for Excellence in Communication. Jim will be retiring at the end of the year as one of Philly’s most beloved anchors.

For over four decades, Jim Gardner has anchored the Action News desk in Philadelphia. He has covered every Democratic and Republican presidential convention since 1980, and has interviewed every president and major presidential candidate since 1976. Gardner’s longevity and consistency is impressive, being there at 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM since 1977. Gardner is particularly proud of the Jim Gardner Scholarship awarded which has been around since 1987 The award is given to a broadcast journalism student at Temple University to help pay for education. Gardner has covered a long list of major local, national and international stories including: The 2020 Presidential election, his One on One with Mayor Kenney on plans to spend $1.4 billion in COVID aid and tackling the city’s crime problem and the impact of Justice Ginsburg’s death.
